Nepal and China share a border and a growing educational relationship. Every year, Nepali students head to Chinese universities on CSC scholarships, particularly for Master’s and PhD programs. The proximity to China is an advantage, and Nepali applicants benefit from strong bilateral goodwill.
How many slots does Nepal get?
Nepal receives approximately 50-80 CSC slots annually through the embassy channel. The Nepal-China partnership includes educational cooperation as a priority, which supports a steady allocation. The university channel adds more opportunities on top of this.
Application channels
Type A (Embassy): Apply through the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu. The Ministry of Education may also coordinate in some years.
Type B (University): Apply directly to Chinese universities. Check our Type A vs Type B guide for the strategic differences.

Tips for Nepali applicants
Apply through both channels. The embassy channel has a country quota, but the university channel does not. Maximize your chances by submitting to both.
Geography and environmental sciences are strong fits. Given the Nepal-China geographical connection (including Himalayan research, seismology, and environmental conservation), proposals in these fields align naturally with bilateral interests.
Avoid preventable rejection. Common mistakes cost applicants every cycle. Missing documents, inconsistent dates, and vague study plans are the top culprits. Read our guide to application red flags to stay clear of these.
Consider southwestern China. Universities in Yunnan, Sichuan, and Chongqing have strong ties to Nepal and are familiar with Nepali students. The climate is also more temperate than northern China.
Police clearance processing. Request your police clearance report well in advance. Processing times in Nepal can be unpredictable.
