Sri Lanka and China have maintained educational cooperation for decades. The CSC scholarship remains the most popular fully funded route for Sri Lankan students heading to China, particularly at the postgraduate level. Here is how to navigate the 2026 application process.
How many slots does Sri Lanka get?
Sri Lanka receives approximately 30-60 CSC slots per year through the embassy channel. Through the university channel, the number is uncapped.
Application channels
Type A (Embassy): Apply through the Chinese Embassy in Colombo. The Sri Lankan Ministry of Education or University Grants Commission may play a coordinating role.
Type B (University): Apply directly to Chinese universities. The university nominates you to CSC.

Tips for Sri Lankan applicants
Contact professors early. An acceptance letter is the most impactful element of your application. Start reaching out to Chinese professors at least 3-4 months before the deadline. Our cold emailing guide with templates walks you through exactly how to write these emails.
Strong recommendation letters matter. Ask referees who know your work well, not just people with impressive titles. Our recommendation letter guide explains what makes a letter effective versus generic.
Port City and BRI alignment. The Colombo Port City and other Belt and Road projects mean that engineering, urban planning, maritime studies, and economics proposals can reference the China-Sri Lanka connection directly.
English proficiency is straightforward. Most Sri Lankan universities teach in English. A medium-of-instruction letter from your institution will satisfy the language requirement at most Chinese universities.
Apply through both channels. The embassy and university routes do not conflict. Maximize your chances by applying through both.
