CSC Scholarship Timeline 2026: How Long Results Take

Waiting for CSC scholarship results is one of the most stressful parts of the process. Applicants check their email dozens of times a day. They refresh the CSC portal hoping for updates. And they ask the same question: how long does this take?

Here is a realistic timeline based on how CSC actually works.

The full timeline at a glance

The total process from application to arrival is roughly 6-9 months. But the waiting between submission and results is what feels the longest.

Stage-by-stage breakdown

Stage 1: Application submission (December to April)

The CSC online system typically opens in December or early January. Different embassies and universities have different deadlines:

Getting the timing right is one of the most underrated parts of a successful application.

Stage 2: Embassy shortlisting (March to May)

If you applied through the embassy route (Type A), your application first goes through your country’s reviewing body. This could be the embassy, the ministry of education, or a designated agency.

They review all applications and create a shortlist. This process takes 4-8 weeks depending on the country and number of applicants. Some embassies publish shortlists publicly. Others only notify shortlisted candidates directly.

Stage 3: CSC review in Beijing (April to June)

Shortlisted applications from all countries arrive at the CSC office in Beijing. CSC reviews applications, matches applicants with universities, and makes final decisions.

This is the longest wait. CSC processes tens of thousands of applications from over 180 countries. The review takes 6-10 weeks, sometimes longer.

During this period:

Stage 4: Results (May to July)

Results come at different times for different countries and application routes:

You will typically be notified by:

  1. Email from the university
  2. Your embassy or nominating authority
  3. The CSC portal (status update)

Not all three happen simultaneously. Some students get university emails before their embassy notifies them. Others find out through the portal first.

Stage 5: Admission documents (June to August)

After acceptance, you receive:

These documents are mailed from the university. International shipping takes 2-4 weeks. Some universities send scanned copies by email first, with hard copies following by courier.

Stage 6: Visa and travel (July to September)

With your admission documents, you apply for a Chinese student visa (X1 for long-term study) at the Chinese embassy in your country. Visa processing takes 1-4 weeks.

Frequently asked questions about timing

Can I contact CSC to check my status?

You can try, but responses are rare. CSC handles a massive volume of applications. Your best source of information is usually your embassy (for Type A) or the university’s international student office (for Type B).

My friend got results and I have not. Does that mean I was rejected?

Not necessarily. Results roll out in batches. Different countries and universities receive results at different times. Wait at least until the end of July before assuming rejection.

What if I have not heard anything by August?

If you have no response by mid-August, contact your embassy or the university directly. At this point, silence likely means your application was not successful, but confirming is still worth doing.

Can I attend another university while waiting?

Yes. Many applicants continue their current studies or work while waiting. There is no requirement to pause your life during the CSC review process.

Do PhD applicants hear back at the same time as Master’s applicants?

Generally yes, though some universities prioritize PhD decisions because supervisors need to confirm slots earlier.

Tips for the waiting period

  1. Save confirmation emails and application numbers. You will need these if you contact anyone about your status.
  2. Prepare your documents in advance. Have passport photos, medical exam results, and visa documents ready so you can move quickly once accepted.
  3. Stay active in applicant communities. Other applicants from your country often share when results start coming in. That is more reliable than refreshing the CSC portal.
  4. Have a backup plan. Apply to other scholarships or programs simultaneously. Putting all your hopes on one application is risky.
