How to fill out the CSC online application form (step by step)

The CSC online application form at campuschina.org looks simple. But every year, applicants make mistakes on it that cost them the scholarship. A wrong agency number, a mismatched name, or an incomplete field can flag your application before a reviewer even reads your study plan.

This guide walks through every section of the form.

Before you start

You need these items ready:

  1. Your passport (for exact name, number, and date of birth)
  2. Your chosen university names and their CSC institution codes
  3. Your embassy’s agency number (for Type A applicants)
  4. Your study plan (typed and ready to paste or upload)
  5. Digital photo (passport-style, white background)

Browser tip: The CSC system works best in Chrome. Avoid mobile browsers. Save your progress frequently since the system can time out.

Step-by-step walkthrough

Section 1: Personal information

Name: Enter your name exactly as it appears on your passport. If your passport says “MUHAMMAD AHMED KHAN,” enter it that way. Do not use nicknames. Do not change the order. Mismatches between your form and passport are a common rejection reason.

Date of birth: Select your passport date of birth. The system uses this to check age eligibility automatically.

Nationality and passport number: Copy-paste from your passport if possible to avoid typos.

Photo upload: Use a clear, recent passport-style photo. White background, face centered, no filters. The system has specific size requirements (usually under 50KB). Resize your photo before uploading.

Section 2: Education background

Highest degree: Select your most recent completed degree. If you are currently studying, select the degree you expect to complete before enrollment.

Institution name and dates: Enter the full official name of your university (not abbreviations). Include start and end dates for each degree.

GPA or grades: Some applicants leave this blank because their university does not use GPA. Enter whatever grading system your transcript uses. If your university uses percentages, enter the percentage.

Section 3: Program information

Application category: This is where you select Type A (Bilateral Program) or Type B (Chinese University Program). Choose based on your application strategy. Read our Type A vs Type B guide if you are unsure which to select.

Agency number: Critical for Type A applicants. This is a numeric code assigned to your country’s nominating authority (embassy, ministry of education, etc.). Your embassy’s CSC announcement will include this number. Entering the wrong agency number means your application goes to the wrong reviewing body.

For Type B applicants, enter the university’s institution code instead.

Preferred universities: You can list up to 3 universities in order of preference. For each, you need:

Teaching language: Select English or Chinese based on your target program. If you select Chinese, you may need to show HSK certification or enroll in a language preparation year.

Duration of study: Select the standard duration for your degree level:

Section 4: Language proficiency

Chinese language level: Select your HSK level if you have one. If you do not have HSK, select “No certificate.” This does not disqualify you from English-taught programs.

English language level: Enter your IELTS, TOEFL, or other test scores if you have them. If you have a language waiver, note that in the remarks.

Section 5: Study plan and research proposal

Study plan: You either paste text directly into a text box or upload a PDF/Word file, depending on the form version. If pasting, formatting may be lost. Write your study plan in plain text without special formatting.

If uploading, PDF is safest for preserving formatting.

Section 6: Documents upload

Upload scanned copies of:

File requirements:

Section 7: Review and submit

Before clicking submit:

  1. Review every field for accuracy
  2. Check that your name matches your passport exactly
  3. Verify the agency number (Type A) or institution code (Type B)
  4. Confirm university preferences are in the correct order
  5. Ensure all required documents are uploaded
  6. Save a copy of the completed form (download the PDF preview)

After submission:

Timing your submission

Do not wait until the deadline day. The CSC system slows down as deadlines approach. Submit at least 3-5 days before the deadline. This also gives you time to fix any issues.
